Ah, the obscure release I couldn't even listen to the whole - until now.

Being bored by my current monolithic industrial collection, I decided to look upon new bands. What better source could it be than a tribute itself?

Small song reviews ensue.
The meter is like:
0 = utter shit and failure
2 = wouldn't bother to care about the band's further existance
2,5 = ok, but wouldn't listen to them voluntarily
3 = a good band to check out
5 = better than the original song

1. Kill the Thrill. Awesome band. They play a version of Us and Them, and actually I like their version more than the Godflesh one. Awesome production, awesome ideas, and creativity over the top. I've already had a copy of their CD Low somewhere but it was never really listened to. I'll definetly give it a spin afterwards.
5/5

2. Antigama. They are some Polish grind/punk band if I can recall correctly, so I don't really understand what are they doing here. They're good with theIR instrumentS, but somehow you get the feel they just don't get it. The cover is done in typical dilettante attitude. The song loses all of it's appeal shortly after vocals kick in. Their rhytm section is massive although that doesn't save the song.
2/5

3. Weeping Birth. A really nice opening, followed through some weirdness, ending up in total mess and...BLACK METAL??? The reason I don't give it a 0 or a 1 is the mess/breakdown part felt actually a quite good aim, only baulked by the musicians' amateurism. After than when the blast beats came it was anything but appropriate for the monolithic industrial feel.
2/5

4. Dee N Dee. They played a version of Crush my soul. Even though so far they are the musically least skilled band of the compilation (they aren't even playing the right notes of the riffs), their energy simply got me. They have really got that spark going on.
3,5/5

5. Counterforce. Meh. They're a typical example of great musicians doing it wrong and shallow.
2,5/5

6. Erling Solem. What the fuck? A rock'n'roll song out of Wounds? That's some nice experiment! Great jam with a great feel, I feel really sorry for the production and the bassist fucking the whole up. Could be much much better.
3/5

7. Behold! The Living Corpse. Whoa there. Here are some cool 13 minutes of the Flesh being covered smooth and nice. There are slight problems with the master though - the guitars are thin and the front vocals are too loud and supposedly "evil". The background voices and the final two minutes save the song.
3,5/5

8. Set in Stone. Oh yess! Love is a dog from hell. One of my personal favourites. Starts off with an industrial pop intro which eventually turns into a bit faster version of the song. I'm bitching about the production seemingly as usual, the drum machines are too loud and have absolutely no bass. As the song advances the band loses the feel at places due they rigidly follow the original structure - a structure works at certain speed rates, not either of them.
4,5/5

9. Are You God How not to get a vibe of a song and push it into the high grounds of unnatural pretentiousness. The half point they get is for having their technique figured out.
0,5/5

10. Woden. Uh oh. What the fuck did they just do to this song? Sounds like a bunch of punk kids in NOFX shirts trying to be brutal and fail. They don't even have a feel for the song nor for the genre. Hope they've abandoned it already.
0/5

11. Thralldom. Out of tune guitars, and dull harmonics for the first. But actually it works. Maybe it's just the refreshment after Woden's disgrace to the song Xnoybis. The vocals are really awesome, as well as the reverby guitar noises. The bass is not Godfleshy at all, but it's right on spot with the six strings. This is one of the better performances here, gentlemen!
3,5/5

12. Pedigree. Brilliant usage of electronics. They play a version of Hunter, and after some research all I've found of the band was a single Depeche Mode song on an official cover album. It's a bit shame, as they are really the band I'd like to check their other releases as well.
The song is a bit weak on guitars and atmosphere and strong on beats, yet it's still fucking professional!
4/5

13. Khaos Divine. Impure. How sweet. Keep the structure and modify it's harmonics. Cute idea, and the end product is not bad at all. The production is probably the worst so far, but the energy is definitely not! Great techniques, great atmosphere. They're not shitting us. Finishes in an awesome outro. Could have been a 5/5 if the production was good.
4/5

14. Blut Aus Nord. Ok. Now they supposed to be a famous band or so. At least here in Hungary every second metalhead either knows them or have heared about. The cover itself is not that bad, reverby, doomy, original and professional. But the vocals are entirely made out of fail.
3,5/5

15. Grenouer Vs. COD. Or rather just simply COD as the name is only a self-promoting name for Grenouer - the main band of the members of COD. Their weakest point is the overdriven guitar and the strongest is the simple reverbed melody. Which happens to be played better than the original. The vocals are horribly russian, but oh well, the song is still good.
3/5

16. Infection Code. Seconds into the song I knew I just not going to like this one. The band tries to be Korn and Biohazard at the same time. They are noticably not that skilled with their instruments. Kudos for their sampler guy, who makes the song somewhat bearable.
1/5 (at first I was giving 1,5 for this...then I heared the last 50 seconds)

17. Fragment King feat. Leech. Now this is some crunchy garage bass. In terms of the compilation, it makes it really colorful and more of a trip than just bunch of a songs threw together. In terms of the song itself, well, it's not my cup of tea. I'm still going to give 2,5 points for their creative approach.
2,5/5

18. Diabolus Ex Machina. They reminded me of Cable Regime with a Ministry sound. The song is barely recognizable, yet not that bad. They're reportedly a black metal band which makes me feel weird as this is the most rocking song on the whole release so far. Even the tempoes are set up to psychedelic trip time!
Actually this is the final genuinely enjoyable song of the release. Be careful with the rest!
3,5/5

19. Cyclens. Rather an IDM/glitch artist, and it starts out as he's going to make shitloads of trippy stuff out of this song. Instead it's just twiddling with simple drum machine layers, resembling of Pulp. Yes, an OK experiment, but not that memorable.
1,5/5

20. Fuck the Facts. Yet another grind project on this compilation? What's the world's coming to? Their intro is quite enjoyable and deep, but they lose it all in the progression, trying to make it over-the-top. The song starts at 2:20 or so, and loses it's credibility about 10 seconds afterwards.
2/5

21. Begotten. The basic idea would been really great, but they selected a really inappropriate song for the realization. The vocals also suck. The whole rather reminded me of those wacky gore/porngrind bands we just don't get how they get to play on an international grindcore festival at Obscene Extreme.
0,5/5

22. Cthuwulf. Ok. I was wrong about Khaos Divine. Cthuwulf happen to have actually the worst production here. They play Avalanche Master Song in a classic grind appeal. Much better and way more sincere IMHO than most of the other grindbands featured here. But note this wasn't even recorded in a studio!
2/5

23. The Skeletonz. Oh god no! The local high school band is playing Godflesh!
0/5

24. Kamp Chaos. This sounds like a bedroom project of a random university pothead guy. Seems like the shitty songs were left to the final parts of the release. There are some ideas in the guy's drum machine logic, and the abscence of the 6 strings, but that's it.
1/5

25. Condition. Another really shitty production song. I did like the intro, but I did not like the song. The vocals are horrible. The project is dull.
1,5/5

26. Prophelation. Yet another horrible production for the end. Loud drum machines. Maybe a little bit even disturbing as well. But better than most of the end. A slight refreshment after this big wave of horrible bands.
2/5

Rating of the whole record: 47/100

yes, i second Alf (second half, geddit?)
Give us the titles!

I am glad you liked the Kill the Thrill cover, they're friends of mine Very Happy They even put the Godflesh cover on their latest CD "Tellurique".
And I think Pedigree is somewhat associated to this board too. I can't remember how.
http://www.myspace.com/pedigree1

I think the compilation was made on low budget (probably no budget for some of the bands), so that explains the poor production/mix for some of the bands.
My only criticism is that most of the bands on this compilation are metal. I would have enjoyed seeing a wider range of sounds.

Very difficult to find. I did a review for a French website when it came out. If I remember correctly it was not very different from BassTotem's one, but the site doesn't exist anymore and I didn't listen to it since a long time. I liked very much a few tunes on it, some others... hum.
I even remember burning copies of both CDs and sending them to one of the avalanchers... I don't remember.... JMA, you remember who it was?.. Wink

There's quite a big influence of Godflesh in their music. From more traditional viking/black in the early releases to Neurosis and Godflesh influences that created their own unique stuff.

Try the releases:
The Mystical Beast Of Rebellion
The Work Which Transforms God
Thematic Emanation Of Archetypal Multiplicity

After that they ... went even weirder with MoRT. Their latest release "Odinist" is again more back to the style of the two first mentioned albums.

I don't know the first releases, but to me there is not a big gap between MoRT and Odinist. Anyway a very unique band and really intersting releases.
And by the way, Appease Me (PHOBOS, Overmars, Monolithe, Bunkur...) is the record label of the members of BaN.

I don't know why, but this coinage made me smile.

some songs were really good, others were total shit. this could've easily been cut down to 1 disc and been a much better release.

i haven't been paying attention to this forum, but OH LAWD someone actually listened to this comp AND reviewed it! ugh.

i got my copy from nihilistic holocaust and skipped through the tracks and immediately lost my copy for obvious reasons.

Condition was my project. that recording pre-dated having a live drummer or any realistic method of making a quality recording. accurate review.
