Hi all,
Thought some of you may be interested in this.
I have for the past 6 months or so been curating a sound exhibition called
'In A Silent Way' as I've been undertaking a Curatorial Mentorship with a local gallery. The basic premise is 8 sound works designed to be played quietly. They will be placed evenly around the room on identical listening stations with the idea that they can be listened to individually (at close quarters) or as a unique soundscape within the room along with the natural sounds from outside the room entering.
I was incredibly fortunate to get such a great bunch. Some of you fellow Aussies may know the Aussie artists involved, but all of you would know as one of your brethren, my sole international artist, one Nicholas Bullen!

Unfortunately this is not set to tour the world (yet), but any 'mainlanders' venturing down to Hobart over August, please drop in to see it. It opens on July 27 (with a symposium the next day) and will continue for a month.

For the rest of you, there will be an 'extended' catalogue which will be a limited edition (of 100, hand number copies) that will include a CD compiling all the works.
I also plan to make available as a download a 'walk through' field recording of the space with the works installed and playing, to give an aural sense of the environment.

For more info:
http://www.mattwarren.com.au/inasilentway.html

This will be where the download will be available:
http://roomofsilencerecords.bandcamp.com

At this stage the CD will likely be available through the gallery.

Just thought I'd let you all know!

I'm planning to head down your way again (for work this time), but alas it's in November... perhaps you can extend it till then lol ?

As others have said the 'walk through' sounds like a good idea! Is there anything on the walls, or is it entirely to do with sound perception?

This sounds like a very cool concept and I'd definitely come check it out if I were anywhere near Australia.

I'm also sure Miles Davis would approve. Wink

Alas, I can't extend it. But would be great to catch up again sir.
No it's pretty much all about the sound. All that will be on the walls will be the speakers and a title and statement between them for each work. These will be spot lit with a small Red, Green or Blue light. The rest of the gallery will be dark, so kind of a meditative, listening space.

So the show is up and responses have been good so far.
Two of the Sydney artists Laura Altman and Monica Brooks performed at the opening, improvising on clarinet and piano accordion, responding to the installed sound works.

There is a recording of a gallery walk-through and the opening performance available now.

Cheers
