Although others may grumble about that show, I enjoyed it... but watching the generators blow up during the young gods set just before they went on did make me a little nervous about traveling so far to see a band! |
Weren't you holidaying in Europe at the time anyway? Otherwise that was one expensive concert ticket. |

Good memory... I bought the hellfest ticket before the missus and I had planned to go to Europe. So yes, in the end it was a 'shorter' trip from Italy. |

A memorable weekend indeed! Blown up Generators, shitty sound and all.
Still, the atmosphere right before they came on was fantastic. |

I kind of figured this album wasn't going to put forward the version of Godflesh that interests me. But that's not saying it's not really well done for what it set out to do and just what Justin described, minimal and brutal.
For me Godflesh was best in however you would describe songs like Godhead, Monotremata and Mantra-heavy, spacious and otherwordly at times. Those and some of the more uptempo tracks like Veins and Slateman.
It's possible Jesu being in existence helps define Godflesh as it is on the new one. The more expansive side that had been melded in with the brutal and minimal maybe has been intentionally left with Jesu. For me, this leaves one project mostly without the weight to hold my interest and the other mostly forgettable in another way. I say mostly because there is Jesu material that I think is excellent and there are moments of brilliance on the new GF.
Of course I don't expect anyone else to care what one person personally hoped for in the new lp, what Justin and Benny saw for it is what it's meant to be, but figured have been on this board too long not to comment on a new Godflesh album.
I'm glad to see the response has been positive and think it's awesome that they are making stuff uncompromised, strictly on their terms. Hope this one leads to more. |

JKB commented on someone's post on FB, stating the GF would be returning to the US in Sept 2015... so I guess we'll see him in 2016 |

Very pleased. Still absorbing it,but very pleased with what I heard so far. As dark and brutal as this album is,I found myself smiling quite a bit. |

the last 2 tracks, TOE and FOF are massive. was hoping for another 20-minute track, but these will do. |

I'd say it's a pretty unnecessary album. Godflesh cabaret if you will. It does get better as it goes along. But, honestly, who really gives a damn about 'Forgive Our Fathers?' Honestly ask yourself that question after listening to 'Mantra' or 'Weak Flesh' |

Listened to the album twice now, so not really had it sink in as much as i would like. I'm not going to pass full judgement on it till it is in my hands and i have gave it a few spins in the car or on my vinyl player. I will however say that it sounds massive and that it will be interesting to hear more of these songs live. |

I felt the same thing. TOE - towards the end, felt like it was going to expand into something spacious and enormous...something akin to my favorite GF stuff ever. I felt a 'Go Spread Your Wings'-type leadup. Then it just dissipated. IMO that could've been twice the length. I was sad to hear it end.
However, for any naysayers...IMO...it's more GODFLESH than anything since Selfless. And..that may be the most subjective comment ever...but what made me love this band died after that...and this is within that earlier realm. I don't care if it's the worst entry into that tier...I'll listen to this any day over SOLAH, UNT, etc. |

it was much the same scene in NYC with JMA, Sherrie and I.
Well, Sherrie remained pretty cool, but me and JMA held hands and danced in circles, shrieking in a glass-breaking pitch. |

There are many phases you pass through when watching Godflesh live throughout their career. My favourite would be the late-nineties surly head nod. |

the surly head nod is alive and well. i suspect cavemen were doing it while one of them played a dinosaur's ribs with a human femur and irradiated cockroaches will be doing it to whatever passes for their music in the future. |

^THIS. Just finished listening to it for the 1000th time (and starting over again right now hah).. Sounds fucking awesome through my Tannoys, Ben's never sounded so massive before. Of course it aint Pure/Streetcleaner/Selfless/first EP but its fucking Godflesh and some solid Godflesh at that.
Leaked already too go figure. |

Is it just me or am I really hearing Pure II being used for the feedback intro to Forgive Our Fathers? |

Numerous listens in. Bonus tracks included.
Some are just crushing. I love it.
Bonus tracks...they're OK. Once again, was hoping Imperator (Version Dub) would be more 'spacious'.
The last section of Shut Me Down (Version), where everything drops out, then builds back up. Awesome!
Faves: Deadend, Shut Me Down, Carrion, Towers Of Emptiness
Need more listens! |

Comparing what I was saying (and some agreed) about Godflesh and Selfless, in the latest interview, JKB says,
"The last great album Godflesh made was in 1994 with Selfless. After that, the subsequent albums were exploring different themes. We had sort of an identity crisis. We used real drums, but ultimately, Godflesh was essentially two guys and a drum machine. We’re back to the blueprint of what Godflesh was all about, this primal meeting of man and machine."
I was surprised to read this. I mean...*I* felt that way, but to hear him say it...wow. |
