finally caught Stars of the Lid last month after missing them several times for various reasons over the years.
was under the impression that with latter-day SotL, i would probably be hearing the string quartet they have now doing the lion's share of the work with only a bit of the old live SotL deafening guitar layers happening. but it turned out to be a good mix of the two. Seemed to be mainly material from the last 2 records, which makes sense as I think the tour coincides with the re-release of both of those. |

prolly go see Keith Whitman tomorrow night before he leaves these shores for Australia.
"Electronic musician and composer Keith Fullerton Whitman performs Ezra Pound Redactions, as part of Damon Krukowski: NOT TO BE PLAYED. The exhibition includes enlarged digital scans from the delaminated master disc of Pound’s 1939 readings. Fullerton processes data from the scans through his analog-modular system to create complex sounds and real-time sonorizations. "
i'm not even sure what most of that means, but it'll probably beat picking my toes at home |

Swanzzzzzzzz.......Sat night.
They were actually great, and I appreciated not having to look at a shirtless Thor all night. The keyboardist who took his place brought something new (and good) to their overall sound. And he wore a shirt. |

Just saw Earth and Boris this past Saturday at the Grog Shop in Cleveland. Great show from both bands, especially Boris who played Pink in full. Saw them back in 2013 as well and was able to see Flood live and in full as well. Great luck! |

^ that's a good combo
saw Darkher album launch show over in Hebden Bridge the other day, very hypnotic dark mellowness with beautiful vocals , bit like a doomy Portishead. |

This month I saw:
Shining (Nor) - pretty good,
Intronaut - excellent,
King Cimson - marvellous, truly marvellous,
YOB - possibly even better than KC was, which for me is saying a lot. |

(Should have PM'd this, I only realised when I got to the end and saw how much I wrote)
Reiflin has taken a "sabbatical" they are calling it, whatever that means and has been replaced by a guy called Jeremy Stacey who I know nothing about except what KC have written about him. I personally don't care for Harrison and I was disappointed by the fact that Reiflin has skipped out on these two jaunts around Europe (I am seeing them again in Vienna in November) but this Stacey character absolutely fucking killed it when I saw them in Zabre in Poland, he is an absolute monster of a drummer and the band a whole really is something special. Definitely more "English" and "Wetton" than "American" and "Belew" though so take that into consideration.
Another thing I would say is that comparing the show I saw to the recently released "Radical Action..." box set of live stuff, the film doesn't do the band enough justice. The film was a very smooth and polished performance, in the flesh it was considerably more powerful and forceful and I don't think it was just because I was in the room, I think the band have decided to hit it harder on this tour. |

YOB/Black Cobra
Black Cobra were great in places but much prefer them on record.
YOB though. Wow. Easily one of the best gigs I've seen in ages. Super tight and heavy as f**k and the vocals just lift it way above other doom acts. Really blew me away and so much fun which isn't something you can say about doom bands too often. |

Saw SubRosa on Thursday, immense gig and really nice people (one of which noticed my Helms Alee shirt and we had a discussion about them; took away the sting of there not being any copies of the latest album left for sale)
Bumped into Mark also who somehow had managed to snag VIP access. Shame about Darkher having to pull out due to voice troubles, but having said that, even the lead vocalist of SubRosa was sounding a bit croaky. Must be the damp up here. Wasn't too sure about Dystopian Future Movies however, and we had missed Nomad due to traffic, but I easily got my moneys worth from just having seen SubRosa alone.
As for upcoming gigs, hoping to see Alcest and Dalek play in Manchester in November, along with a trip down to London Town to see a mighty combo of Neurosis and Earth - hopefully tickets haven't sold out for that one before work sign off on my days off! |

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's tribute to the music of Prince!!!
There was full band on stage with the symphony, including Dr. Fink (the dude with scrubs and a surgical mask) from the original Revolution on keys.
It was actually very touching and very boisterous at the same time!!! |

Had I known an Avalancher was there, I would have bought you a pint!
I thought Earth were good... nothing prepared me for Neurosis. W-O-W. Air so thick with bass that you could hardly breathe at times. First time seeing them live, and they certainly did not disappoint.
My experience of the Neurosis catalogue is relatively small (I think I've only ever listened to Through Silver In Blood entirely), and Monday night drove home to me just how much I need to listen to all of their material. I can honestly say I liked every single song they played in that set. |

You should've stayed also on 2nd night!
They played career-span sets on both nights - besides 2 first records almost every album got its time. And they played title track from Through Silver in Blood on 2nd night. |
