Last night I saw sunn perform in Athens, Ga. I am not very familiar
With their backcatalogue and in the past have been rather put off with
The hype and pomp associated with them. Even so, I gave it a go.

Just as I suspected, their music is boring as hell. If this is guitar drone
Based post rock, post metal then I need to go burn the 100 or more cds
Worth of dark ambient experimental eleoctro acoustical concret that
I've been amassing since the '90s. For the most part there set sounded like a dirgey 2 hour soundcheck with very little interesting elements, barely any ambience to speak of.

In spite of their live performances shortcomings, the performance art
Component was pretty cool. Excellent reflective costume and fingertip laserbeams. Portions of it were tolerable and moderately entertaining.
Kinda reminded me of a deleted scene from Barkers Lord of Illusions, or an initiation video for a super sophisticated satanic cult.

I've peeped maybe one or two things around the web that seem more interesting than their live fare. My major gripe is that overload and a lazy 2 hour set of soundchecks isn't my idea of drones. Jk flesh has crafted tons of clever electro acoustical tape delay based music that while often
Derived from guitar or strings is far more complex and interesting. If I heard a
Little more resemblance to Thomas Koner or Lustmord last night maybe my reaction would be different. If you're not gonna provide that sort of textural experience then there had best be some more groove, even if its low and slow.

I understand and appreciate Earth, admittedly
Prefering their more song oriented material. And as I said ive got probably
100 albums worth of post industrial and drone ambient music, music that a
Lot of people might consider boring. Despite having a pretty cool climax performance art wise, Sunn 0))) are boring as hell and horrendously overrated.

If any of you could pinpoint the creme de la creme of their back catalogue
Please advise.

I've never seen them but am going at the beginning of June. I'm expecting to find it boring but to be impressed by the volume.

That's been my experience with Swans, too. Boring but sonically impressive. But I think Sunn will be even more boring -- at least Gira is intermittently entertaining to watch.

Their releases/limited editions/merch/gigs, etc seem to sell well despite your erroneous 'boring' tag. Shitloads of people like Sunn O))), because they too are probably in on the pisstake.

So don't come on here and tell people certain bands are boring. Let people make up their own minds.

If you go out with the mindset that you will be bored instead of entertained, then that behavioural mindset has already been ingrained in your psyche. You'll get what you expect.

On the other hand, if you are a boring cunt in the first place, then nothing will float yer boat...

Never really liked them on record.
Saw them once live, impressive volume, it was entertaining, but nothing more.
Certainly "boring" tag for me.

I've seen Sunn O))) once live with Boris back in 2007 and although I'm not a fanboi I enjoyed the show. Atilla was on vokills which made it all the more entertaining... without him I'm sure I would have found it rather dull.

I have to be in the right mood to listen to them, and I quite enjoy Dømkirke and Black One.

I don't like sunn either.

On record they do absolutely nothing for me and on the 3 occasions I have seen them live:

1. walked out of the first one because it was so incredibly boring and pretentious.
2. was bored shitless for the start of the set, including the fact that JKB was on stage, and then Attila Csihar came out and was absolutely stunning.
3. saw them again at a Supersonic, one of the guys from Guapo joined randomly on keys, JKB played guitar and the place was stuffed with beardo worship, I don't think Attila was with them this time and it was once again, very, very boring.

I don't think there is any problem coming on here and stating that you find something boring, admittedly I'm agreeing with soothsayer's opinion so I'm biased here but plenty of folks here don't like Bolt Thrower and I don't think that diminishes the discussion.

And they will all perish in flames. I still don't get the hype behind Sunn, its just that, HYPE, the musical quality just doesn't exist.

Saw them last night for the first time. The volume was impressive, like having a full body sound massage. I enjoyed the first 45 minutes or so.........but then the second 45 minutes just went on and on and on without really adding anything substantial to the proceedings. I would've left early but didn't want to strand my friend.

Still, I'm glad I went if only for the volume's sake. It's worth witnessing once, I'd say; and if 90 minutes of body-shaking drone with no real tonal or textural variation is your thing, worth seeing more than once.

And it reinforced my abiding impression that O'Malley is an empty robe.

Saw them a couple of times.
Similar to your experience.
First 45m is really immersive cos of the volume and low-end but then I found myself heading to the bar.
Worth seeing the once.
