I wasn't really on the ball this year picking up new stuff, aside from Godflesh and a handful of other things.

Year end lists are good for finding new stuff from people you share interests with and I'd be interested to see anyone's list from here.

I created this Youtube Playlist of some of the stuff I liked this year.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsiowVPOTdrq5DRuC15Pk039AQUAt2u9O

A few things missing I liked but its about 95% of what I've been enjoying this year.

my list is here
https://atomsmashermusicblog.wordpress.com/2017/12/08/top-albums-of-2017-mark-watson-jones-of-emissaries-of-syn/
but i realised there were some crucial ones i left out

burning flag - izabel - this is just superb angry punk with an incredible groove, even godflesh esque guitar crunch at times, can't stop listening to it
lust for death - demons - if you are missing bolt thrower let these french dudes fill the gap in your life, played a fest in czechia with them Smile
drug honkey - cloak of skies - from avalanchers own stable this is a twisted, swirling, almost psychedelic filthy industrial horror show, the stuff bad dreams are made of, fair play Master P

I'll eventually sort these into a top-10 or so. But off the top of my head the first are about in order of my fave 5 or 6.

Vintersorg
Nargaroth
Kreator
Arch Enemy
Druadan Forest
Wintersun
King Of Asgard
The Haunted
Ithilien
Godflesh
Satyricon

Firefox is telling me I spelled just about every word above wrong. Smile

ask and you shall receive!--thanks guys.

2017 stuff other than Godflesh I picked up and liked a good deal. APologies in advance for long winded bullshit.

Elder - Reflections of a Floating World. These guys are definitely in their moment, last 3 albums have been a step up each go.

Spotlights - Seismic. Not sure as instantly appealing as the debut, but still solid. Could change view on that though, only given it a couple of spins.

Aimee Mann - Mental Illness. Every couple of years she quietly drops an album and it's always really good.

Helheim - landawarijaR. Ever since Asgards Fall, where they adapted sort of a Hammerheart meets To Mega Therion approach (French horns, timpani drums), these albums keep getting better and better.

Caught them on their first US tour this year which was kind of a disaster--a bummer of last minute rescheduling when the headliner didn't get into the country and lots of the shows were cancelled and moved. The upside was they played a great set for the 4 people who know who they were in the tiny club.

Mogwai - Every Country's Sun. Almost every Mogwai album gives me the same reaction first go--that I've heard this album before with different track names and it's fine for the most part. But then I listen to it a few more times and it's locked into constant play for months. Probably the best since Hardcore. Solid.

Godflesh - really digging this one. So good to not just have shouty/riffy, but that vibe that comes across like a David Lynch film where you can't explain the plot, but you feel like you're getting the story on another level. If that makes any sense...

nice list. many of your posts over on FB are piles of records I'd never heard of--it's like an ongoing list all year long I can pull from. So thanks for that.

I saw Oxbow this year and while it was an absolutely amazing show I can't seem to get into their records. One of thsoe bands that, for me, only work live.

Man, that's a mighty list--I'll have to print it out and keep it in the wallet for aimless record shop visits when nothing seems to come to mind.

Happy New Year, Avalancherers. Hope your 2018 is really good or at least a whole lot less shitty than 2017.

Hmm, my list! I'm a rather slow listener and like to take my time + return to older stuff so it's not very extensive. The list only contains albums that are truly great and will probably be remembered. Random order.

The Body + Full of Hell - Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light
Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper
Algiers - The Underside of Power
Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Oxbow - Thin Black Duke
Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
Endon - Through the Mirror
BNNT - Multiverse

I've also included a list of stuff that I intend to hear in hopes of some good stuff.
Converge - The Dusk in Us
Brockhampton - Saturation 1/2/3
Blanck Mass - World Eater
Rosalia - Los Angeles
Amenra - Mass VI
Ex Eye - s/t
Unsane - Sterilize
Celeste - Infidele(s)
Stefan Wesolowski - Rite of the End

Didn't do much for me either. Sounds very generic.
