For you Coil fans, the new Ape Of Naples/New Backwards 4LP box set can be preordered from Important Records now. 1500 copies, 300 on red vinyl apparently. A hefty $80 price tag, with shipping at $37 to Europe!! God only knows what it would cost to get one to Australia. I'm doing my darndest not to order one, but it's hard, it's a nice looking set. It also looks like there will be a future CD edition.
For Nurse With Wound fans (if any!!), the new book/CD thingy, Images/Zero Mix is also out, a deluxe version with a bonus album, limited to 400, and a regular edition without the bonus album and in less nice packaging limited to 1500. Deluxe is $65 and normal is $30. There's a bit of uproar over this one as Zero Mix was originally released on vinyl, limited to 400, and the label swore blind it would never be reissued on CD. Pissed off a few people. The book contains images of the painted sleeves Stapleton did for the art editions of Angry Eelectric Finger.
End of record nerd collector geek update! |

really? I hadn't heard that... link?
'Ape' is already out on CD, it's just the 'Backwards' disc that's unreleased. |

If you read the blurb in the news section on the Important website it says the Backwards material is "currently" not available elsewhere, a sure sign that it possibly will be available in the future. |

No, there won't be an official Backwards release. A few of the tracks on Ape Of Naples were already finished products of Backwards era tracks, and this "New Backwards" will complete the set, so I doubt Sleazy will want or need to revisit them again. |

Hehe, a few years ago I would have got both, and if I didn't get a red one I'd spend every waking hour hunting one down! But it would be a bit of a folly to buy more expensive Coil editions when I'm in fact considering selling all the ones I have anyway. Now that I have a record player in my grasps again it is tempting to buy the vinyl, copy it, and then maybe offload it. It could be a while before the CD version appears. Hmmm, what to do, what to do.....!!! |

ordered mine monday the second i got the email announcing it. $90 after shipping sucks but it does look nice. but i've bought 3 or 4 lp sets for well under $50 before. Anyone know how much the etchings add to the cost of production as 3 of the 4 lps are etched in this case. not that i'd think important would overcharge. But we all know coil would. regardless i can't imagine these will be available for too long. so buy one now so you don't have to pay some stupid price on ebay next year when u decide you need one. |

$90 including shipping in the US, add about $30 to that for shipping to Europe, and probably more for elsewhere. Quite pricey. I'm officially retired from the expensive edition buying business, and I'm happy as long as I have the tunes. I'm sure the New Backwards stuff will crop up somewhere soon, or I can trade it with somebody, until the CD arrives.
I'm glad to see Important have a made it a 2-per-customer deal, with full shipping to be paid on each copy. That might prevent some of the eBay hawkers snapping up ten copies for future auctions.
In any case, I have to keep saving for Colour Sound Oblivion, the 10 DVD live set that will appear some time this century..... hopefully. |

Oh yeah that'll be nice! It'll be interesting to hear how they sound compared to the tracks that leaked ages ago... |

Well here we go.
First of all, the CD comes in a simple plastic casing. It contains the actual CD, as well as a blank CD with the track titles printed on. Also, three pictures are included, they all look like close ups of organic tissue. One of the pictures has a hand written number on it, mine is 21, so I guess that's the copy number.
The recording is an 'official' bootleg of a show from portugal 2003, as it says on the homepage. John balance is not on here, so there's no vocals. Not necessarily a bad thing, as some of Coil's live recordings suffer from him not singing in tune (IMO of course). It is easy to hear that the sound doesn't come straight from the soundboard, and the audience is clearly heard. But apart from that, the quality is excellent.
Tracklisting:
Blue Rats (18:14)
Triple Sun (12:56)
Radio Westin (13:32)
Drip Drop (10:04)
The first five minutes after death (11:24)
Blue Rats opens with a long ambient intro, before slowly evolving into the track as we know it from 'Blacklight District'. No vocals though.
Triple Sun is yet another version of a now well known theme. It seems that Coil was changing this song continuously over the last few years (Two versions on '..and the ambulance died...' and one version on 'The Ape of Naples'). Compared to the studio version, this is much longer, has no Marimba but instead a lot of digital noises, loops and beeps.
Radio Westin is essentially the same as 'Wraiths and strays of Paris' from Black Antlers. Again no vocals, and the track doesn't go up in tempo in the end.
Drip Drop isn't really a song, more like a long row of noises well known from other albums. I recognized many elements from Musick To Play In The Dark.
The First Five Minutes After Death comes very close to the original from 'Horse Rotorvator', only with added ambience and digital coilishness.
Definately worth getting IMO, and it will get it's spins when I enter it into my random nice Coil playlist. |

Is the Porto bootleg a soundboard recording? I've had the boot for a few years now, wonder if it's the same recording.... |

A rip would be greatly appreciated here!

I promise that if it ever does come out on CD I'll delete the files and buy the disc. That should put those pesky mods off the scent! |

Jesus! How good is The New Backwards!! Each track easily stands up to the quality of Ape Of Naples, and are pretty much up there with any Coil. Sleazy has done an unbelievable job, I'm one very happy chappy! |
