For anybody who has not read it yet, this is the last paragraph of the review of New Backwards from Brainwashed...

"If you haven't dropped the $80.00 US to get the vinyl box set on which this is included, do not despair. It is a forgone conclusion that this will be released on CD, probably sooner than later, and a little bird tells me that when it is released digitally it will contain three more tracks in the same vein. The New Backwards is essential for Coil fans new and old, but more than that, it is a fascinating study in how to look backwards without becoming stagnant, how to move forward without forgetting the past. If there were a musical way to prove the existentialist assertion that the past and future are woven into every present moment, this would be it."

Hopefully we won't have too long to wait...

Thanks a lot. It confirms what we all beleived would happen sooner or later, but it is great to hear that we have more tracks to look forward to. Now all we have to do is to wait a year or two Smile

Agreed, let's hope. In the meantime, there's always the new soisong homepage for us to stare at....

Normally I would never dream of making such a statement when it comes to Coil deadlines, but in this case the tracks are recorded and it has not been officially announced, so I have a feeling it might not be too long. Usually they announce a release before it's even been recorded and have us wait a couple of years. Anyway, I'm in no rush, it's just nice to know that there might be a few more tunes coming our way...

Interesting post just made to the Coil list from the guy who did the Brainwashed review of The New Backwards. Hope he wouldn't mind me repeating it here. Interesting stuff that I was not aware of for the most part....

"While researching my review of The New Backwards, I found out some
information about the exact timeline of the famous "Backwards demos"
that might be common knowledge to some veteran Coil fans, but was new
to me.

For a long time, I had labored under the assumption that the so-called
"Backwards" demos were recorded in New Orleans, at Trent Reznor's
studio, and represented work done by Coil intended for an album called
"Backwards" to be released on Nothing Records. This was my impression,
and while I can't point to any one source for this, I thought this was
the accepted version of things. Turns out that this is very wrong.

The demo tape containing Elves, Egyptian Basses, Simenon, Crumb Time,
etc. etc. is actually from the very early 1990s, from sessions recorded
not long after LSD, in the UK. These demos were recorded for Torso
Records and were leaked very soon after, and the bootlegs have been
making the rounds ever since. As everyone knows, these demo recordings
were instrumental, and though they are often great, are more like rough
sketches than finished compositions.

After doing these demos, Coil got sidetracked with other projects like
Black Light District and other things that seemed to them more
interesting to pursue at the time. The demos sat dormant, for the most
part, until...

Some vocals and extra bits were recorded 5-6 years later, in the
mid-1990s when the Coil/NIN connection happened. "Cold Cell" and "AYOR"
and (I think...) a version of "Fire of the Mind" (maybe also "The
Test," "Sex With Sun Ra" and a few other tracks) were recorded around
this time, but shelved indefinitely, except for a few things that got
out via Songs of the Week or comp contributions.

The album names Backwards/International Dark Skies/God Please Fuck My
Mind For Good/The World Ended A Long Time Ago were all announced or
rumored at one point or another, but it was basically the creative
second-guessing of fans that conflated these names with the Torso demos
and (to some extent) the Nothing Records album, as if they were all the
same thing, a sort of Freudian dream condensation of all the things
Coil hadn't finished yet.

Then right towards the end, about 2002-3, some more recording sessions
were held with the intention of bringing some of these tracks to
completion. This is probably where vocals like "Nature is a Language,"
"The Most Accomplished Surgeon," etc. came from.

Everything wasn't put together and finished until Sleazy and Danny Hyde
returned to the material in 2007.

So TNB actually represents an almagamation of recordings made over a
period of nearly 18 years, many different time periods and recording
sessions that were never necessarily meant to go together. In this
sense, TNB is even more impressive than it seemed at first to me, as a
work of creative synthesis, a recovery and resuscitation of a pile of
mismatched fragments and abandoned ideas and sketches.

So, is this just a "no shit, Sherlock" moment for everyone, or does
this clarify anything for anyone?"

I'm still waiting for 'Moons Mil In Six Phases' and the 'Time Machines' two disc edition.

Oh... and the 'Color Sound Oblivion' dvd box, seeing as he finally managed to get the TG box done, my faith is restored however.

I'm a bit split when it comes to SoiSong, because someone I know told me it sounded like they (sleazy and Ivan) were overusing some presets from Reason 2.0.
I've never tried Reason, so I wouldn't know. Not that it really matters, but maybe I had a bit more imagined from people that used an ANS. /pretentious whining : p

thats great info on the backwards as i never knew any of that. i assumed all of those demos were from the nothing sessions too. as for soisong, i love the myspace tracks and don't really see the resemblance to reason 2. cause if it was a matter of tweaking some presets in that app i would have come out with it ages ago.

Rumour has it that the new Phase of Moon's Milk will be out soon too, with the full box following later. Time Machines may be out "by X-Mas or a little after".

Still no news on CSO though....

And the old Moons Milk Bonus reissue is going to have some bonus material too apparently. Even more new tunes on the way.

I'm not sure what I make of this extra Time Machines material though. Is it stuff recorded back then or some new Sleazy/Hyde drones? Hmm, I'm still a bit wary about Sleazy passing off new solo material as Coil, like the Absinthe track. Not that there's anything wrong with his stuff, but it's no Coil.

isn't the track from the absinthe release, just a drone remix of the song from Live Two?

Yes, it's a rehash of an old tune but done posthumously by Sleazy alone. So not really "Coil". Actually I'm probably just being pedantic, after all he was half of Coil for 25 years. It would be like saying MJH should not have continued as Scorn after Nic left. And that wouldn't have been any good for anybody.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!11!!!

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

I think you Coil people should adjourn to the Threshold House site now. TH has finally got its copies of the Ape vinyl box in. Guess what? The CD version of The New Backwards (with EXTRA TRACKS) is being given away FREE and EXCLUSIVELY with purchases of the vinyl box from the TH site!!!!!

When I say free, the actual price of the box is a fair bit more than Important were charging, it's 80 pounds, instead of 90 dollars. But the "listening CD" seems to be an actual CD with case, not just a CDR.

Now one must decide exactly what "EXCLUSIVE" means? Is it literally going to be given away only with the couple of hundred copies of the vinyl TH has to sell? Or will it turn up again in a years time?

Any previous buyers considering ordering again?

That sounds fucked. I'm not going to pay 80 pounds for this. I'll still wait until it becomes possible to buy the cd alone.

i'm considering it but i'd sell the vinyl on ebay afterwards if i do. looks like the black copies are around $130 and the red are $400-$500. so if i get a black copy i'm out maybe $50 for the cd. but if i get another red copy i'd have the cd and an extra few hundred dollars.

But won't the demand go down once these new ones are out on the market?

I'm really wondering who these imaginary people are who are buying cool stuff for 500$. If it isn't people like us on this list, then who is it? Who has 500$ to spend on these things, but wasn't quick enough to order it when it was available??

my guess is that christopherson's copies will sell out relatively quickly. especially as they are advertising that they have both red and black and they may send you either. maybe the people who are spending the $500 ordered them from important but were just too late and got a black copy? i'm not sure how long they lasted. i ordered mine a few minutes after they went on sale just cause i'm a nerd and got red. and i also have no idea who these people are who spend all this money on coil items but for years and years their stuff has no problems being sold on ebay for crazy amounts. i have been really lucky filling my collection at used record stores over the years. got the worship the glitch 2x 10" for $8 a few weeks ago at an ann arbor store.

huh, I'm a little perplexed now since it said
"The cd version is also available as a separate item HERE, both as cd and download in various formats"
but following the link, it was download-only.

ah well, the laughs on me, I bought the files anyway.

I donīt know much about Coil so I would like to ask the opinion of you specialists here.

All I have is HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS (nice, if, for me, unremarkable) and I love the tracks "First five minutes after death" and "Dark Water" (is this right?) so if someone could point me a "How to listen to Coil" guide, if such thing is possible for an artist, I would be grateful.

What is the name of the Live at Portugal CD?

wait so the cd isn't exclusive to buying the records from thresholdhouse? makes more sense that way as i'm guessing coil didn't get a ton of the copies. that would make the cd version very rare if that is the only way you can get it. now i need to hear the 3 bonus tracks.

Not sure exactly what is happening. Yesterday the CD was "exclusive" to only the box sets bought from Threshold House. Apparently late yesterday the CD was available for a very short time on its own for 15 quid, and then disappeared almost straight away. Now only available as files. Amazing how many of these "misunderstandings" happen with these bands, namely Coil and Nurse With Wound. Gives me the shits.

At the moment it looks like the CD is available only if you buy the box. There were maybe a few more CDs than boxes so they were sold seperately, and if you were lucky and in the right place at the right time you could nab one. But at this rate who knows when, where or how many will crop up again somewhere.

A bit of straight up honesty about the situation from Threshold House would be most welcome.

Good source says that more copies of the CD will be available to buy on their own at 15 quid a pop, but only exclusively from the Threshold House site. There is not an unlimited amount of them either so keep an eye out if you want to pick one up.

I will solve the matter to you:

They will make "limited editions" and tell you it's never ever going to be released again in the history of mankind, ever, forever, in the universe of material things of things that are made, so you will pay 80 dollars for it, and when the edition is gone forever they will re print it again in another format..... and make more money.

Meanwhile, people like me and that other guy who posted earlier in the thread will just download the whole fucking thing for free.

Now that we got that out of the way, and before I got to one of you guys's houses and destroy your limited edition red vinyl of the new Coil, wrapped in a goat's placenta and limited to the cabalistic number of 333....

Would someone please tell me what's the best Coil to listen to?

Sorry about all the vitriol, it's almost 3.00 am, I have an article to finish for a magazine and all of this, as Howard Devoto would say, "Just pours out of me". Wink

Because downloading takes space and bandwidth and I would just like to go for things that sound like "the first five minutes" "dark river" and so on.... Or the things you specialists think are the very best of Coil. I'm trusting my ears with you people!

I'm sorry if my message pissed you off Blipspeed mate, I would buy you I pint if this was a Godflesh-themed pub....

I also like the neglected and unused Hellraiser soundtrack.

Hellraiser is being remade. A 20 year old film being remade. Impressive.

I wonder if Clive Barker needs the money or has nothing to do with this?

It's hard to specifically recommend certain Coil albums as there's such a wide variety of styles covered, but...

Best bet is to get the two "greatest hits" Russian albums, A Silver Voice and A Golden Hair, one has more aggressive stuff and one has more ethereal stuff, from early days to latter days.

The four live CDs will also give a good range.

Scatology and Horse Rotorvator from the 80's, classic early stuff, generally described as industrial, but pretty genre defying if you ask me.

Time Machines, Queens Of The Circulating Library and ANS for your drone needs.

Moons Milk, Musick To Play In The Dark 1 & 2, Astral Disaster for beautiful weird dark electronic music.

Ape Of Naples, Black Antlers, New Backwards for the final direction before Balances passing.

I'm leaving out huge chunks of stuff that could just as easily be recommended as highly as those, but you asked...

If I was to pinpoint a single cd as a place to start, I would say 'Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.1'. Excellent stuff, and still one of their very best. I don't know about it's availability, but you candefinately get it as a download at thresholdhouse.com

They have the CDs in hand so shouldn't be too long a wait. There was an agreement with Important that the CD would not be sold until the vinyl was well and truly sold out. It is sold out now so no reason for the CD to be delayed.
