Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing Nadja play live. I've already given the game away with the opening sentence but never mind.
Having thought about it for a while I often wondered what a live Nadja show would be like and the idea in my head was loud, BASS, "floaty" with a lot of slow progression and the occasional bit of "offfttttt, heavy". Having now seen a show I'm glad to report that while it contained all of these elements there was also quite a few bits I didn't expect, like for example the fact that Leah Buckareff's bass playing is so incredibly solid and a much larger part of the bands sound than I ever thought. Leah's playing is also much more dynamic than I expected so this has opened up a new aspect of Nadja for me that I am going to have to examine (which will be able assisted by the ridiculous amount of merch I bought). Aidan's playing was also really interesting, at some pints he was adding textires that reminded me of Vangelis Bladerunner" works and I loved it.
Nadja don't use guitar amps, they plug directly into the PA via their own effects units and mini-mixer and I'm not sure if this is why but the bass (and sound in general) really was trouser flapping, floor vibrating and rather soothing and relaxing. I'm not often one for sitting down at gigs but I spent the show on a chair off to the side of the room and it was very pleasurable indeed.
Anyway, good show, I came away very pleased.
Outside of the show I would add that Leah and Aidan are very lovely people, they put a lot of effort into Nadja, had some awesome stories to share and if the "new merchandising opportunities" we discussed ever come to fruition I already have my pre-order for an exclusive Nadja knitted hat in so screw you guys I was there first! |
