Napalm Death were astonishingly good, one of the biggest surprises of the pleasant variety of my gig going career. The most violent I've seen a crowd at an Australian gig since I've been here. Barney is indeed the legend I'd been lead to believe he was. |
I caught them in Melbourne and I had my fanboi moment with a chat with Bill Steer at the Melbourne airport earlier that day. Carcass were great and you could tell they were having a good time. Seeing Genital Grinder and Keep on Rotting in the free world made my night. |

Last night:
Patti Smith and Spiritualized
- Both amazing. Not been a big fan of recent Spiritualized stuff but they always pull it out of the bag live. Great show. Patti Smith was incredible. 'Horses' live and then a selection of bit and pieces.
Last week:
Torche
- Never disappointing. Great hooks, heavy riffs and fun times.
Next month:
AC/DC |

Went to a gig last night that was part of a week long "experimental art festival" across many venues here in Vienna and saw a girl called Ashley Paul.
It's been a long time since I last walked out of a gig because the act was so atrocious. I've seen some challenging acts before, people pushing the boundaries of performance, I've seen complete amateurs wring interesting sounds out of conventional and unconventional instruments, I've seen practiced musicians purposefully avoiding the rules of "how to play" in attempts to do something new or different. I'm not adverse to "different" approaches to "music".
This girl, who is apparently a darling of The Wire and various high profile blogs, was completely useless and I fucking hated what she was doing. After 1 tune where she did something with a saxophone that sounded like rubbing an inflated air balloon, followed up by a very sparse sax, guitar and vocal piece (which actually showed some promise) she started bowing a metal plate (with a violin bow), randomly breathing into the sax and hitting and bowing a guitar with no sense of timing and occasionally whispering the same lines into the microphone. It was horrible, in a BAAADDDDD way, and after that I was 1 of around half a dozen people who just went "fuck this" and left.

Exactly. I wasn't at the gig this was filmed at but that's what she was doing, looks like the same material.
15:30 is the point where I gave up. |

hmm not sure what to think of it. Some of it sounds interesting, but it comes across as very contrived hipster and not sincere at all. |

That's the sad thing. I wasn't sure what to make of it myself. I checked out her soundcloud and it was cool. Live, it was atrocious and I had to leave. |

obscene extreme was just mind blowingly good, devastating sets from obituary, terrorizer, SOB, unholy grave, hirax, bulldozer, pungent stench, vital remains, and a load more. cannot recommend the place enough, if you can take the pace... |

it was kind of a last minute (and extremely dodgy) attendance for me but godflesh at bloodstock this weekend were stunning once more. new intro beats, new set, new visuals, devastating sound, minimal tech difficulties |

Dinosaur Jr Sunday night in a room the size of my apartment -- Mascis had his full 3-stack rig on that tiny stage, with Lou and Murph squeezed into the opposite corner. Killer show, and LOUD.
High On Fire tonight. |

I saw that PiL are playing several dates in FL -- a nice change of pace. I'd thought about seeing them in St. Pete since my father lives in Tarpon, but now I'm thinking a trip to Vegas to see Fat Johnny would be pretty great. |

Saw Johnny Rocket and his Moonlandingz (introduced briefly by the godlike Maxine Peake). Total sweat/beer-drenched mayhem. Also Johnny/Lias gave us Minstrels and sweaty ear ham. |

I went to the The Sword last night and it was much more enjoyable than I expected. The new album is nice but it's not The Sword I would have wanted to see (Warp Riders era would have been great I expect).
They, of course, played a lot form the new record, which was actually a cool idea because the guys vocals have always been ropey and now he does what he can rather than recording something in the studio that he has difficulty doing live, I never quite understood that. Surprisingly though they threw out quite a lot of earlier stuff, which was nice but also a bit weird as they are using more of a classic rawk sound now than the earlier "modern day classic metal" sound they used on the first 2 or 3 records and there was sometimes a lack of "ommpff".
If you like this sort of thing and have the chance to catch them while they are in Europe I would say do it. |

I saw Clutch a few times during the 00s and I have to say that after a stunning start the consistently went down hill, unless I saw them supporting someone and then they were on fire.
Saw CoC a few years ago ohne Peppar Pot, they were great.
If this gig rolls into town you think I should go? |

Last- Autechre last night. A monumental beast of IDM sound sculpture. There's really nothing to compare it to... Huge sounds, throbbing bass, skittery beats... Fucking amazing.
Next- probably Bongzilla, unless Spirit Caravan sneaks in there beforehand. |

Yup seen them plenty of times too but this felt really phoned in. All a bit samey without any dynamics. At least they played Youth of America. |
