Hello everyone,

Please pardon the long post. I write with a proposition that may appeal to some of you. I have a collection of field recordings I did of the Nobska lighthouse's foghorn (Falmouth, Massachusetts, US) of which I am very proud. In talks with a fellow foghorn aficionado here on the board, the idea of a companion remix album came up.

I am asking if you are interested in doing a remix of my foghorn recordings using *only* the foghorn recordings as source material. Manipulate the originals as you see fit--whether using effects pedals, plugin extravaganzas, custom-made software patches, painstaking digital audio editing and sequencing, or other techniques--but add no sounds sourced from anything else. This is my primary stipulation.

As for time limits, I am envisioning the remixes as no longer than 8 minutes, and the due date as February 1st, 2012. If you feel you are in the process of making an epic drone masterpiece, and want the 8 minute limit waived, let me know and we'll discuss. Also, if enough people are interested but also can't work with the due date, let me know and we can make arrangements.

So that you can listen to what your source material would be, the album can be found here: http://scutopus.bandcamp.com/album/nobska It is nearly 90 minutes of field recordings, so below I'll list some of what makes appearances in each of the six tracks (all of them have at least the Nobska foghorn):

1. a bell buoy, another foghorn phasing (overlapping, then not, little by little) with the Nobska foghorn, gentle waves on the rip-rap and nearby beach.
2. a loon, a bell buoy, and active waves.
3. a loon, a bell buoy, a passing ship's horn, and active waves.
4. active waves.
5. a bell buoy, and active waves.
6. another foghorn, a dredging barge, and active waves.

If you are feeling up for a challenge, you can use just one of the recordings as source material, though this is not at all necessary.

If you are interested in remixing and know how to convert from FLAC or Apple lossless into .wav or .aiff, click the above link and slap a 0 in the name your price field, and then choose FLAC or Apple lossless when downloading the album. If you are interested and don't have the means or knowledge to do the file conversion, let me know and I can get you the source files one way or another.

If you are unable to master your remix, I am happy to do so for you. Just let me know whether you have mastered it or not when you send it to me. I may do some minor tweaking to already-mastered remixes if it helps cohesiveness across the submissions, otherwise I'll leave your mastering as is.

I cannot pay you, sadly. I do not begrudge anyone for whom this is a deterrent--things are tight right now. I am going to make the remix compilation a free download on my Bandcamp page, with proper credit and links as you wish them to be. (My usual m.o. for my own music is free/name your price, but since almost all of the remix album will be the work of others, I don't feel comfortable asking for money.) If there are alternative ideas, like making the proceeds of each purchase go towards a lighthouse preservation fund or something, please bring 'em up. The ownership of the remix will of course stay with you. The remix album will be under the following Creative Commons license, as are all my releases: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

Please let me know if you have any questions, or a suggestion.

I am so looking forward to this it's not even funny. Well, maybe it's a little funny--it's foghorns for crying out loud!

Thank you for reading all that, and for considering this. Regardless of your answer, I look forward to what you create in the future.

Soundwaves,
Wendell.

man, i hope some of you talented bastards are in for this.

i would love to hear remixes of this really cool material.

puts me in mind of the new chris watson, where he does some different stuff with the material than his usual.

as opposed to sticking with fairly unaltered recordings, with the exception of editing them down and arranging the pieces together, he seems to be working the sounds into rhythms in parts. Some of it might be natural, as a rolling train has a rhythm, but some of it sounds altered.

especially in the "Signal Man's Mix" single--a sort of companion release to the album, where it's completely apparent the material is being manipulated.

also--listening to those Nobska recordings now-- feel like i'm staring off into the fog. helps that the house is currently cold and clammy.

I'm in! Beautiful stuff, I'll grab the stuff on the weekend and do a mumble(speak) treatment on it.
Love a good Foghorn!

I'm downloading right now. I've always wanted to do ambient stuff with field recordings. I like the challenge of using only your source material, so I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Loving them sounds, reminded me of some Watson like klaw mentioned. I will be partaking in the project after the holiday comp and my box set is out this month.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, so I'm willing to push back the deadline for foghorn remixes so there's some breathing room between them and the holiday compilation (which I'm amped for, of course!).

Hi everybody!

Quick reminder about the looming deadline for foghorn remixes--Feb. 1st (though there is flexibility if you need).

Please PM me yr email addresses if you are cool with giving me one, so I can be all direct-like. Smile

underthetale--check yr PM inbox!

P.S. The genius idea to do this whole thing was Mr. chickenf1sh's, just so's we know who is the brains behind the operation! Wink

(sorry for the cross-posting!)

First off, I want to thank those who have submitted tracks already--they sound awesome, and I look forward to releasing this collection!

On that note, I realized I hadn't set a deadline for *myself* to release this thing. As it stands now, some have asked for extensions so there will be some more time for folks to finish their tracks. For those who haven't finished, but still would like to contribute, there is still time.

As for me releasing the album, I aim to do so within the first week of March, so I would ask that all submissions be uploaded to a file sharing site, or server/FTP no later than February 25th.

.wav, .aiff, and .flac are all a-ok formats.

I'd like to apologize if this deadline flexibility irks anyone who hustled to meet the Ferbruary 1st deadline. I blame the coelacanth.

Soundwaves,
Wendell.

I think I'm close to unleash my version. I need to listen to it a few times more on different systems to make sure no more tweaking is needed.

This was supposed to be released as a bundle with the Quartersized remix album on Terranean on the 15th of March. We've been waiting for the last remixer's submission since the 7th I think? The artwork layout should be ready. Don't know what's with the last participant.

I'd like to thank Mothra for keeping folks up-to-date the last month or two. Smile

This is something really exciting for me. I hope y'all dig it.

Apologies for the delays, both regarding release date, and regarding me not having reliable enough internet to get it out there the moment I got up this morning.

BUT IT'S FINALLY HERE AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE PROUD OF THEIR REMIXES!!! Very Happy everybody dance now! the clap!

P.S. It is released on World Listening Day, which is all about raising awareness of our acoustic surroundings, coming out of the burgeoning soundscape/acoustic ecology field::: http://www.worldlisteningproject.org/?p=1551

Really great stuff. Big props to all involved.

Not sure if it was a reference point but a lot of it really really REALLY reminds me of Nurse With Wound's Shipwrecked Sessions, which is a big compliment. This will be getting plenty of listenage,

MAY 2004
Nearly 600 years later, Lofoten was revisited by Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter in a conscious echo of Querini's experience. Bringing no instruments they were left in the tiny fishing village of Svolvær with minimal equipment, and told to get out and make whatever they wanted, sonically, out of their experiences of exploring the islands. The only catch was that three times a week, their work in progress had to be aired on the local radio station, Lofotradioen.
Lofoten never darkens in summer. The air was saturated with the background reek of drying cod, and the headless fish could be seen everywhere, dangling from huge wooden drying racks all over the island. Exploratory walks around the streets of towns like Svolvær , Kabelvåg and Henningsvær revealed strange homemade garden trolls, elves, organic effigies: knotty carved guardians of domesticity that reverberate with a deep rich pagan history.
Every single sound you hear is sourced from environments and objects in Lofoten: buildingd, ships, harbourside tackle, local characters encountered during the period of abandonment on the island. The broadcasts began with relatively untreated material but as the weeks went by, and our poor sailors became more and more hallucinatory, sounds, voices and textures are increasingly distorted, maltreated, mashed into a singular and vivid vision of a community and a place far outside the scope of everyday eyes. Listen for the gulls and terns, squeaking in the background. Or the sound of marching bands and crowds at the local festival, 'Codstock'. The clanging hulls of fishing trawlers and the metallic paraphernalia of a dockside becomes a thundering rhythmic pulse. Voices drifted in and out, from visiting arts officials to Lofoten's more invisible community, like the Namibian refugees Steven and Colin befriended in an apartment on the edge of town.
A memorial to Pietro Querini adorns the crest of a mountain on Sundøya, the neighbouring island to Røst, where his sailors were initially belched up by an unforgiving sea. No such statues for Nurse With Wound - but this music serves as living, breathing, clanging testament to the experience they survived.
Welkommen til Utvær. Welcome to Shipwreck Radio

Enjoyed what I've heard so far! I'm going to download the rest tonight (I have a slow connection because I'm a frugal bastard) and give it some proper listens at the office.

I would have liked to get in on this, but I was kinda AWOL from the board when it came out. Sad

Thanks, blip! Indeed--all deserve props.

Also thanks for the tip. I found there is an mp3 of part of Shipwreck Radio at ubu web, and so far it is very, very tasty.

I listened to it today at the office and it was very relaxing. A quality blend of ambient music and field recordings. I do love the sound of the ocean. Smile

SPEAKING OF...

I've decided to open up Nobska to eternal remixing. Or something. The deal: I'm into letting folks remix Nobska at their leisure. Since the album is already out, it will stand on its own. Any subsequent remixes will be hosted by the remixer on their site of choice for free download, and in the info section of the Nobska Remixes album below the artist links I will post the artist, title, and link to the remix. Please link to the remix compilation on your remix's page so folks can easily notice it.

So please keep me updated if you remix Nobska, and send me the link once you've got it online. I'm unsure about how to deal with MP3/FLAC metadata as far as track #, but please write Nobska Remixes 2 in the album field. I guess all can be track 1 of Nobska Remixes 2. Shocked

Feedback/thoughts on this next stage welcome!

P.S. If underthetale is around, please check your PMs and drop me one!
